Dear Dr. Leone,
Ponce de Leon traveled in search of the fountain of youth. I discovered it through the gentle but skilled hands of Dr. William Leone.
With the passage of time since my hip replacement, I feel the need to express my immense gratitude to you for restoring my quality of life. I had forgotten how good it felt to walk without limping and move without discomfort. I am able to eagerly plan vacations and look forward to outings and holidays with my family. My husband and I once again go walking on the beach. We also hope to resume the dance lessons that we enjoy so much. As a woman it is a particular thrill to get dressed up and be able to wear high heels!
I am searching for the words to adequately tell you how grateful I am for the gift you have given me. Surely, “thank you” doesn’t seem like enough.
Please also extend my appreciation to your wonderful staff.
Sincerely,
Gilda Burstein
Dear Dr. Leone,
I would like to thank you and your incredible team for my successful recovery and result after my total hip replacement surgery. When I came to you, I’d heard you were the “BEST” but I had no idea what that meant. On my first visit and after my X-ray, you explained calmly and clearly to both my husband and myself what my problem was and why I was hurting. We did not feel rushed during our appointment with you! Meeting your staff was also a phenomenal experience! Since we met Susan, your PA, we had again an opportunity to ask questions and clarify certain concerns. There was never any pressure by anyone to proceed with the operation!
After deciding to do the procedure, I came back with my husband to meet with you again to review my questions and concerns. Your whole staff was informative, knowledgeable, supportive and very kind!
We were also advised to attend a pre-surgical class on hip replacement at Holy Cross Hospital. My husband and I found the class informative and it help alleviate any anxiety I had about what to expect at the hospital. I tend to be a worrier, but after all the information I received at your office and from the class, I felt relaxed and confident. I knew I had made the correct decision and I was in the right hands with you and your staff.
Dr Leone and Susan visited me daily in the hospital and oversaw my progress. He and his staff gave me a list of exercises to do in and out of the pool and I recommend that everyone follow their recommendations like I did!
I am now 3 1/2 months post surgery and I feel “brand new!” I have no pain when I walk, climb stairs or exercise! The experience had been amazing and I will not hesitate to replace my other hip with Dr Leone and his staff when necessary!
Thank you Dr. Leone. You are amazing!
Sincerely,
Marianne Carr May 8, 2012
Dear Dr. Leone;
It’s been about seven weeks since you replaced my left hip at Holy
Cross Hospital. As I reported to you a week or so ago, I’m walking
every day pain free. This weekend, I even walked a mile or so each
day at the beach to “test” my new hip on a challenging surface. I am
delighted with the results of my surgery.
I want to thank you and your physician assistant Susan and your nurse
Rose for the professional way I was treated in your office. I know
that good service is never an accident so I commend you for building
and maintaining a beautiful staff. My experiences at Holy Cross
Hospital were equally positive. The nursing staff and physical
therapy staff treated me with dignity and efficiency. Dr. Leone, your
surgical and administrative skills have radically improved my life. I
thank you from the bottom of my heart; God bless you and your team!
George T. Thibault
I want to thank you for what has turned out to be a life changing surgery for me. I spent a lot of time prior to my hip replacement, trying to convince myself that the pain was not that bad, and that I really did not need a hip replacement yet. This was simply due to the fear of the unknown. You and your staff were patient and caring, answering all of my questions and concerns. This allowed me to proceed with confidence. Three months post-op, I am pain free and able to fully participate in activities with my two young children again. Last week I was able to volunteer in daughter’s kindergarten class for the first time, without worrying if I could keep up, or would need to sit down to ease the pain. She was smiling all day. This summer I am planning a summer trip with my girls to the Grand Canyon. This would not have been possible three months ago. My only regret is that I did not have the bad hip replaced sooner and wasted too much time in pain and avoiding activities. So a big thanks to you and your wonderful staff for allowing me to enjoy my life again.
I’ve known Dr. Leone for over 15 years as one of my husband’s partners. I saw him officially as a “patient” in August 2006. After dancing most of my life, I decided to try figure skating. It was sheer joy. One day I was practicing a routine twisting maneuver, when I experienced a sharp, sudden hip pain that would not resolve. I tried resting it and avoiding activity, but it was better only sporadically. Honestly, I had been experiencing occasional mild hip discomfort for a couple of years, but chalked it up to “getting older,” and put it out of my mind. Some years prior, I had been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, but I was lucky — it was well controlled with medicines. I wasn’t sure how much of the hip symptoms I was having now were related to the rheumatoid.
Despite the hip problem, my family and I proceeded with our planned vacation to North Carolina. I attempted an easy hike with my husband and some friends, and recall being in tears because walking down the hill was so painful. I couldn’t even take our dog for a walk, and playing with him was out of the question. I began using crutches. The pain was awakening me at night. I wondered how this could happen to someone at 43 years old, despite being so careful to exercise and eat properly. My entire self concept was wrapped around the joy of movement, so this situation was miserable. To make matters worse, the crutches were aggravating a past injury to my elbow and wrist. Even my back hurt.
When I saw Dr. Leone, he told me that I would ultimately need a Total Hip replacement. He believed that the arthritic changes in my hip were due to hip dysplasia – which I was born with — and not rheumatoid arthritis. I could see on the X-ray that the ball of the hip joint did not appear to be fully seated in the actatbulum, and bone cysts had developed. He emphasized that I should explore all other options, so that if I did decide to proceed with surgery, I would have full confidence that it was the correct decision.
After a lot of soul searching, I made the decision to have a hip arthroscopy. Replacement seemed so radical, and I had felt fine when the injury happened. The procedure was done in early 2007. The labrum and bone cysts were repaired, and I remained on crutches for 3 months following surgery. Apparently, my hip was too far gone, because once I started to walk the pain returned. My hip continued to deteriorate, and the symptoms worsened. Every step had become excruciating.
I returned to Dr. Leone in February 2008. He was completely supportive, and again recommended a total hip as the best treatment with the highest probabilty of success. In March 2008 I had my hip replaced. It has given me back my life. I’m glad I tried “everything” before having surgery, but definitely should not have allowed myself to suffer so long – two years was too long! My advice to others would be to have the procedure if you are in a lot of pain. There are no rewards for toughing it out, and you lose precious time and quality of life. My husband likes the quote, “time lost can never be found,” and it is so true!
Happily, life is now back to normal – most days I don’t even think about my new hip. I’ve been going to a local dance studio, and have been like the proverbial kid in the candy store. I’m back on the ice skating, which I love, exercising with a trainer, and enjoying Pilates. Finally, I once again feel like me.

Just wanted to send you a quick note thanking Dr. Leone again for the excellent job he did with my total hip replacement. I am so grateful for everything he did —thanks to the surgery, I am able to dance five days a week, and am fulfilling a lifelong dream of learning partner lifts and ballroom dance.
Best Regards,
Janine Mills
I began experiencing pain in my knee that was radiating towards my hip. This was reminiscent of pain I had several years prior. This pain was treated with a knee arthroscopic surgery. With that experience I suspected I had somehow re-injured my knee. I saw a physical therapist but therapy made it worse. Progressively the pain increased and I was loosing mobility. It reached a point where I could not longer bend to put on my own sock or cross my legs. I was scared because the limp was aggravating my back and neck. I’ve been a manager of Human Services with the US Postal Service for 30 years I was finding it painful just to sit a my desk. Getting up was terrible and embarrassing. My last straw was feeling chronically tired because if I moved in my sleep pain would awaken me.
I had heard about Dr. Leone’ s reputation but when I met him I was immediate comfortable. I was also surprised and pleased he was so young. Somehow I had envisioned him to be a much older man because I’d met so many people he had cared for over the years. He diagnosed degenerative osteoarthritis of my hip and explained that the pain I was feeling in my knee was “referred” from my hip. He replaced my hip in January 2008. I was surprised and relieved how quickly I got well. The best part is that all the pain went away, including in my knee. I was able to again return to my “walking” for exercise.
My story is not quiet over. In January of 2010 Dr. Leone replaced my other hip. The same type of symptoms developed. This time I was not going to wait as long. I could not have been more please with the care.
I’m a Physician Assistant and have specialized in orthopedic surgery for nearly thirty years. Our practice moved to Holy Cross hospital in 2007. I met Dr. Leone in the OR and on the floors and quickly learned first hand who was doing the majority of joint replacements and taking on the really difficult cases. Because I knew I was having problems with my hip and knee, I was even more interested in asking nurses and anesthesiologist who they would see for themselves or their families. Just as importantly, I had an opportunity to observe how Dr.Leone handled himself and how he communicated with his patients. I was trained in the military and I’ve been very fortunate to work with many great doctors over the years. A major part of my day is assisting during surgery and as a professional I know how critical it is who the individual is who is doing the surgery. There is a reason one doctors’ patients do so much better than another. This was personal. I needed to find the right doctor to take care of me. I also felt fortunate that I was now working at Holy Cross which has developed a national reputation for its hip and knee reconstructive program.
In my younger years I was real athletic and played all sorts of sports. I injured my left knee and just lived with it for years. I call it my “bad” knee. I had a knee arthroscopic surgery in 1987. That helped for a while but slowly my knee became more deformed and painful. Life is busy and like most people I didn’t complain and kept on working. I would wear a brace but still the knee would occasionally give way and it hurt. It became harder to stand at the operating table.
Then, in about 2007 my right hip suddenly became painful. Even more disabling than the left knee. I had groin pain, it hurt to bend and I had progressively less and less motion. Simply putting on my own shoe became a struggle. I was unable to exercise. I was limping so much that my patients and other staff would question me. Unfortunately, I knew all the symptoms I was having were coming from the hip and knee joint. I had an X-rays taken of both my hip and my knee and the joint spaces of both looked destroyed. Sometimes it doesn’t pay to know too much. I also knew that the only real solution would be a total hip and a total knee.
I saw Dr. Leone for the first time as a patient in October 2007. I was impressed with his thoroughness and professionalism. He made sure he really understood my hip and knee situation, but also issues with my back and health in general. I had already decided that I wanted Dr. Leone to do my surgery but having met with him in his office I was sure.
I first had my right hip replaced in January, 2008. I recovered very quickly and returned to my duties as a physician assistant, including assisting in the OR after only three weeks. I found working out in the pool very beneficial. Being a patient in the hospital that you work can be uncomfortable. I cannot say enough good things about how I was treated. That good care continued after I went home.
I waited until October 2008 to have my left knee replaced. It’s been my impression over the years that total knee patients have more pain and a more difficult recovery than total hip patients. Once again, I was wonderfully pleased with how quickly I recovered and how beautifully my incisions healed. The recovery was very similar to the recovery after my hip replacement. I again was able resume my responsibilities as a physician assistant within three weeks, although I continued with physical therapy for longer. As a professional and as a patient, I cannot recommend Dr. Leone or Holy Cross Hospital any stronger.
When I began this journey towards Total Hip Replacement on January 27, 2010 my feelings were mixed. Was my FEAR just an acronym of False Evidence Appearing Real or will it really be the Miracle?
Thanks to the Leone Team, Dr. William Leone, Susan Simonton, Barbara O’Brien, Diane Sayer and the wonderful staff in the office and also at Holy Cross Hospital, my surgery was unbelievably exciting because everyday brought so many changes and improvements. By the time I got home on Saturday afternoon (day 4) I was standing in my driveway (with a walker) having a conversation with 2 neighbors thinking, wow, no pain… just amazement!
And that was after 1 ½ hour car ride home to Palm City (no problem).
I saw and experienced all those little things that make the difference and you guys are the Total Package! I would obviously recommend you to everyone.
Thank You So Very Much!
And yes…. It was the Miracle!
When I first met Dr. Leone in April 2009, I felt like “I didn’t have a leg to stand on.” My left hip was hurting terribly and my right hip, which had already been replaced, was dislocating. I had heard about Dr. Leone from friends and traveled many miles to see him.
I had undergone right THR in Rhode Island in November 1999. Unfortunately, that hip would periodically dislocate. This is so scary, painful and disabling. I had learned to always be “careful”; between these episodes the hip didn’t hurt and I was good but “careful.” In February 2009 my hip again dislocated while on a cruise ship off Australia. I’m so grateful that the ball could be put back in on the ship but the experience was traumatic and I made up my mind then that I had to get it fixed because I was so scared it would happen again. My left hip had developed the same kind of symptoms that my right hip had developed before it was replaced. I had already been told that it too had developed arthritis and would need to be replaced. I was still trying to be active but the left hip was catching and awakening me from sleep and I was avoiding walking. I love to walk and play golf. I remember how aggravated my hip would feel getting in and out of the golf cart.
Dr. Leone helped me understand why my right hip kept dislocating and confirmed the arthritic destruction in left and need for Total Hip replacement. He was very through and I never felt rushed or that I didn’t have time to ask all my questions. In spite of the pain I was feeling in the arthritic left one, he recommended that we first re-do the right. I agreed because I was so scared that my hip would again dislocate.
In June 2009 my right hip was re-done. He replaced the socket with a new one and replaced the ball on the existing hip stem with a much bigger one. I recovered quickly and the hip immediately felt stronger. I worked out in the pool nearly everyday and I believe that that was very important for my recovery. Dr. Leone replaced my left hip in January 2010. I’m just six weeks after this surgery. I got well even quicker. I gave up my cane after 2 weeks. The hip itself feels great. I’m back in the pool and walking for exercise.
I have regained my confidence and I feel good. I’m extremely pleased with the care Dr. Leone and his staff provided. Holy Cross is a great hospital.
Your grateful patient,
Carol Brenner
I’ve been a professional fitness trainer, massage therapist, and wellness coach for more than 20 years as well as a competitive body builder. I’m so appreciative that I am again able to do all these activities that I enjoy. Staying in shape and feeling healthy is a huge part of who I am. I absolutely would not be feeling like I do now had Dr. Leone not replaced both of my hips in 2005.
In May 2005 I first met Dr. Leone. I was limping and in pain and did not understand why. Over the years I’d always been able to “work through the pain” like an athlete. This was different. It had been going on for several years and I couldn’t ignore it anymore. I tried all the non-operative treatments including therapy, NSAI, natural supplements, and chiropractic manipulation. I was so desperate that I contacted a doctor who injects growth hormones. Dr. Leone helped me understand why my hips had become so arthritic. I was born with dysplastic acetabulum. In spite of how athletic and active I was, abnormal hip forces lead to the wearing away of the cartilage and progressive pain.
I wrote Dr. Leone a card after my surgeries thanking him for his “humility” and “kindness.” I have the utmost respect for him as a surgeon and human-being.
I’m doing great and I’m very grateful.
My wife and I met Dr. Leone just several months ago. I’ve always been active and spiritual and believe that the body can do whatever my mind wills. I was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis when I was just 15 years old. This is a genetic inflammatory arthropathy that leads to progressive stiffness and destruction of our joints, particularly the spine and hips. In the 80’s my cervical spine required that bone be removed so it could be re-straightened and then fused. With this disease, it’s critical to “keep moving.” I completed the New York marathon in 1998 and the Anchorage marathon in 2000. I’ve traveled as a Missionary, speaking on how Jesus has changed my life and that is where I met my wife, but this is a different story.
I was told by other patients who Dr. Leone took care of that “he was the man.” I had seen some other orthopedist and was told that I was “ready” for a total hip replacement. None of them were volunteering to do my surgery. Because my neck, back and hips were fused, it made things “trickier.” I felt complete confidence after meeting with Dr. Leone for the first time. I knew about his surgical skills, but he also had human skills.
I had my left hip replaced November ’09, and my right hip January ’10. I was extremely pleased with my care in the hospital and after discharge. I was extremely pleased with the team of doctors who Dr. Leone arranged to see me during my stay at Holy Cross, from the anesthesiologist, the internist, and physiotherapist. I was able to rehabilitate as an in-patient at Holy Cross and that was superb. The best part is that both hip surgeries are perfect. I’m in no pain. I’ve long since given up my cane and I feel good. My next goal is to run / walk next years New York marathon. I have no double that I’ll do it. Needless to say I’d refer my family or friends to Dr. Leone.
I was being plagued with back, leg, and hip pain for years and finally decided to see a “top notch” orthopedic sports doctor. Dr. William Leone examined my hip and took X-rays. I could see that the bones that make up my hip joint were rubbing together.
I’ve played top-level competitive tennis for many years. When my hip first started to hurt, the pain would go away after warm up. After play however, it would hurt worse. Two weeks before I met Dr. Leone, I won an important match. I was in so much pain after I could hardly walk. Tennis was out after this. I was limping and miserable.
Dr. Leone made me feel comfortable and confident. He treated me like a family member and really talked to me. He recommended a total hip replacement. He explained that tennis players are often at risk for hip arthritis because of the constant acceleration and deceleration during play. We discussed new technologies and even surgical instruments that Dr. Leone invented.
I had my hip replaced in June 2009. I was back on the courts in September feeling like a teenager. I didn’t take a single pain pill after leaving the hospital. I was dedicated to the rehabilitation Dr. Leone prescribed and I think that made a big difference.
Today I am free of pain. I can move and bend normally. I’ve been ranked in the top ten in the nation in various age groups for the past thirty years. Last month I won a 65 and over tournament in Pompano Beach and followed that with a win at Broken Sound Club in Boca Raton. I’ve been selected to play nationally on the East Coast of Florida Team.
I can’t thank Dr. Leone enough. I had given up tennis before I met him. I consider Dr. Leone to be “a wizard” in restoring health to an individual.
I’ve been blessed with a strong work ethic and a wonderful family. I recall as my son was growing up, he once “accused me” of working too much. He was probably right. I was driven to be THE BEST. Because I’ve always strived to be the best, I’ve always sought out THE BEST.
When I began to experience difficulty walking and pain in my hip, I sought out all sorts of opinions and options about how to treat it. I was told by doctors in Ft. Lauderdale as well as St. Louis that I needed a hip replacement. I met at least 4 or 5 people who had had a hip replacement who discouraged me because they were still struggling. Then I ran into an old friend who had had both of his hips replaced by Dr. William Leone. Subsequently, this Dr. Leone’s name kept coming up and uniformly he was praised and uniformly his patients did well. I had already decided to have Dr. Leone replace my hip even before meeting him. After I met him I was even more confident of my decision. I’m only sorry I wasted a year and a half before I learned of Dr. Leone and got my hip replaced.
Some friends and neighbors were surprised that I would go to a doctor that did not participate in Medicare and hence I would to pay a fee. The fee was just for his service. All the other fees associated with my surgery were covered by Medicare insurance and my supplement. My answer was simple; I wanted to go to THE BEST. And I did.
I’m just three months after surgery and I feel great. Actually, I don’t feel anything associated with the replaced hip. To me there is nothing more precious than my health. I think as one gets older, this becomes even more of a priority.
I have recommended Dr. Leone to family and friends with the full confidence that they will be getting THE BEST. His office staff and the arrangements he’s made with Holy Cross are also superb.
I will never forget the first time I came to your office in 2007. I was worn-out, miserable, scared, crippled, with no expectations and with severe pain. My only thought was that I would never be able to walk normal again. You saw my affliction when you said that I needed a left total hip replacement. My hip was collapsed due to avascular necrosis and osteoarthritis.
But, you gave me hope and I found comfort in your voice when you took your time to explain everything with compassion in your eyes. You even said my name and holding my hand said: “I am going to take care of you. Do not worry”. And you did. Three weeks after my surgery I was driving my car again! Six months later the same condition presented in my right hip and a year later in my right knee.
Today, three years later, I can say that I am immensely thankful for giving me my life back. I am very happy with my new bilateral total hip replacement and my new right total knee replacement. Happy because today I can walk again and I can smile again.
I am so fortunate to have a doctor like you in my life; so wise, warm, caring, good hearted, always giving, generous and kind of spirit. The best orthopedic surgeon in the whole world!
I am one of the many thousands that feel the same way. I’m very proud, and I am truly a work of art in the hands of Dr. Leone. Your works are wonderful. So, how can I not say that you are precious to me?
I shall tell everybody that you, William A. Leone Jr., M.D. re-made me and I feel like brand new again!!!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I will never forget you…
As I reflect over the past 10 years, my wife and I have concluded that you not only saved our future but also our lives.
I recall so well the first day I walked into your office. I was scared and apprehensive. I had been told that I needed a hip replacement. I feared that my police career, which had been happy and active, would prematurely be over and with it my future. I was tense. My police instincts were activated and I knew our meeting was destiny. You reassured me that although I did need a hip replacement, that the situation was not “grave” and that I would do well.
In April of 2001 you replaced my right hip. I followed your guidance and did the prescribed exercises without fail. I was amazed that it was just nine days from the date of my surgery to the completion of supervised rehabilitation. I was back to work in just 30 days and “declared fit for combat” after 90 days. My commanders were amazed.
You saved my career and future. I would later retire with full pension after serving 26 years with the Police Department and begin to enjoy the fruits of retired life. In my case, it was to fulfill a life long dream.
With my wife’s blessing I returned to college and completed a culinary degree as a French Chef with Le Cordon Bleu certification. I’m proud to say I graduated top of my class, Summa Cum Laude. Several months after graduation my left hip began to act like the right one prior to my hip replacement. I was not about to wait as long for the second one. I was without pain almost immediately after surgery. Once again you and your staff guided me through rehabilitation.
I returned to full time Chef duties in just 3 ½ weeks. Many days I’m on my feet a full 10-12 hours since surgery. I play golf. I go to the gym 3 times a week and walk 2 miles every day for exercise. When I tell people that both of my hips have been replaced, they don’t believe me. Then I show them my X-ray of Bionic Man Chef David from the waist down.
To anyone who is looking for peace of mind before surgery; constant support and encouragement before and after surgery; and a professional ability secondary to none, then Dr. William Leone is you physician.
In June 1983, when I was 38 years old, I required a left total hip replacement to stop severe pain and stiffness resulting from a congenital hip disorder. At the time, hip surgery was a far riskier and complicated undertaking. For a time my left leg felt longer than my other leg. Eventually, that feeling subsided and I became satisfied with the result.
In October 2005 I fell and fractured my pelvic bone that was supporting my prosthetic cup. I was unable to stand or walk and had intense pain. I had been feeling some discomfort in my hip months prior to the fall. After the fall, pain became disabling and I could not walk. I was admitted to Holy Cross Hospital and diagnosed with a fractured acetabulum. The most frightening news was that the prosthetic cup had dislocated into my pelvis. The orthopedist on call felt this was “such a complicated problem” that only Dr. Leone had the requisite skills to operate.
Dr. Leone explained that the pelvic bone was significantly compromised from advanced osteoporosis and from the wearing out of the old prosthesis. The fall resulted in the upper half of the acetabulum separating from the lower half causing a “pelvic discontinuity.” It would require fixing the fracture and revising the entire old hip replacement. That getting the fracture to heal would be the real challenge because the bone was already so deficient.
I felt comfortable and confident with Dr. Leone. So did my daughter and son-in-law who are both medical doctors. They know personally of Dr. Leone’s exceptional skill and outstanding reputation. He spent time with my family and me and discussed what needed to be done. He outlined various scenarios that he might encounter at surgery and described how he would handle it. He allowed ample time for questions and was readily accessible to all family inquiries. At surgery he was able to stabilize my fractured pelvic using a plate with screws. He then placed a special “revision” cup that would heal to my bone. After the operation he informed me that all had gone well.
Just three months after surgery, I was able to return full time to my responsibilities as a teacher of young children. Remarkably, I have also returned to the gym and pool. Incredibly, I am able to workout easier than before my fall.
I feel so fortunate to have been under Dr. Leone’s care, a truly exceptional physician. He returned me to an active and fulfilling lifestyle at the age of 66. I’m still active at 70, something I would have doubted immediately after my fall.
Thank you, Dr. Leone from my family, my grateful school children and especially me.

I am a fifty-three year old physician from Peru. At the age of two, I suffered from the Polio virus, which resulted in leg and hip disparity. I am also a mother of two, and soon after giving birth to my second child, I began to have pain in my back and in my left hip, the one that was not impaired by the Polio virus. I suffered severe pain for many years and only started looking for different opinions from accredited doctors within the area only two years ago.
The final verdict was that I needed a hip replacement on my good leg. Apparently, the hip had worn out over the years from trying to compensate for the lack of strength in my other leg that was affected by polio. As you can imagine, many fearful thoughts came to my mind, until one day a recommendation came to me: Dr. William Leone, one of the best orthopedic surgeons in all of Florida. When I attended my first appointment with him, his staff accommodated to my needs and I did not wait a long time to see him. He established a personal relationship with me immediately. Dr. Leone worked in a very professional manner and performed a meticulous exam. Just with this single meeting with Dr. Leone, I already knew that he would be a caring and compassionate doctor willing to help me with everything I needed.
My concerns of any post surgery complications went away because I immediately knew I was in good hands. Thanks to him, I can now walk again without any pain. I highly recommend him as an orthopedic surgeon. His credentials, bedside manners and professionalism are all of very high standards. I am sure that he will continue to change many lives for the better in the years to come. Thanks to you and your staff for improving my physical abilities in giving me a new hip.
Sincerely,
Diana Franchini M.D.
Thorough Research Leads Fort Lauderdale Man to The Leone Center for Orthopedic Care
John Donovan had been a recreational runner for over 40 years before beginning to experience chronic hip pain.
He stopped running and switched to alternative workout options like swimming and the elliptical. To keep the pain in his hip at bay, John progressively modified his regular workout program and took over the counter pain meds plus glucosamine with chondroitin. “The pain would never completely go away.” “My hip would lock when I tried to get up,” said John. “It was embarrassing and painful.”
“When pain prevented me from sleeping through the night, I knew something had to be done.”
John began research on surgeons and the types of implements used to replace hips. As a retired FBI agent and investigative consultant, he was used to digging up details and extensive background information on people and procedures.
John recalls a friend recommend that he make an appointment to be evaluated by William Leone, MD of The Leone Center for Orthopedic Care at Holy Cross Hospital. Before he knew it, other friends from church, his gym and even a physician friend also were recommending that he see Dr. Leone.
“I met Dr. Leone and was immediately impressed,” said John.
Dr. Leone diagnosed degenerative osteoarthritis of the left hip and recommended a hip replacement. The surgery to replace John’s left hip was done August 2006. “I was so pleased with the result of my surgery and the care that I received that I began volunteering time at Holy Cross in the research department.”
“When symptoms in my right hip began and progressively worsened, I decided not to wait as long.” In September 2009, Dr. Leone replaced his right hip.
John feels that a big part of his quick recovery was swimming plus a strengthening program before both surgeries and the aquatics program Dr. Leone initiated after each surgery. “I think aquatic therapy is the best way to initiate rehabilitation. I then added the bike and elliptical.”
“I feel great and would absolutely recommend Dr. Leone and Holy Cross Hospital”

Ben Frosch was always an active man, fitting a daily two-and-a-half mile walk and an occasional game of basketball into his busy work schedule. But that changed in 2007 when Ben, then 52 years old, was sidelined with excruciating pain in both of his hips.
“I felt a constant, radiating pain,” he said. “I was avoiding my daily walk and all sorts of activity. I was miserable.”
Doctors treated Ben with cortisone injections and anti-inflammatory medications, which temporarily eased the pain. He described feeling frustrated and that he was losing his quality of life. “I just didn’t want to live like this.”
A consultant to the health care industry, Ben has relationships with orthopedic surgeons across the country and began a comprehensive search for the surgeon and hospital that would best meet his needs and expectations. One of his appointments was with William Leone, MD, of The Leone Center for Orthopedic Care at Holy Cross Hospital. Dr. Leone diagnosed degenerative osteoarthritis in both hips and recommended total hip replacement. “I saw other top tier orthopedic surgeons as well. I even made an Excel spreadsheet listing their experience, complications and other factors to help me decide. What drove my decision were RESULTS.”
The surgery took place in August 2009, and Ben was in the hospital for three days.
“The care by Dr. Leone and his team and the environment at Holy Cross Hospital was superb,” said Ben. He chose to recover with professional physical therapy at home. “I stopped using my cane and was walking four blocks around my neighborhood just one week after my surgery. The recovery was unbelievable. With physical therapy and exercise, I just kept getting stronger and stronger.”
Ben was then able to get into his backyard swimming pool to begin aquatic therapy. He describes being able to swim again as “euphoric.”
“It was like Dr. Leone handed me my life back on a platter,” said Ben.
“I recently arranged for Dr. Leone to take care of my cousin who lives in Israel. He replaced one of her hips and she too is doing beautifully. We are both very grateful.”
Benched from Hip Pain, Boca Raton Athlete and Businessman Back in the Game
To say that Joel Platt is an active guy is an understatement. As a young man, Joel was an avid baseball player – covering shortstop and almost signing with the Red Sox – until an arm injury caused him to have to give up the game. He continued to play sports while living and working in the northeast, eventually taking up highly competitive club league tennis after moving to Florida.
In between matches, Joel began developing the premier museum of sports in the world, Sports Immortals in Boca Raton.
Several years ago, Joel became sidelined when he began to experience pain in his hips. “It came on fast,” said Joel. “The pain kept getting worse to the point where I could hardly lift my legs to get in and out of my car.”
One day, Joel was out playing tennis when the pain was so severe, he couldn’t make a move. “I’m usually so quick, but my mind could not will my body to move,” he said.
Joel made appointments with several orthopedic surgeons who all diagnosed him with osteoarthritis and recommended that he have his hips replaced. He booked a date to have his first hip surgery, but several friends recommended that he see William Leone, M.D. of The Leone Center for Orthopedic Care at Holy Cross Hospital before making a final decision.
“After I met Dr. Leone, I said ‘this is my man,’” said Joel. Joel ended up having two hips replaced by Dr. Leone within 12 weeks of each other.
“The surgeries went better than I expected,” said Joel. He was in the hospital for four and three days respectively and went through physical rehabilitation at home. He was back at work in 12 days.
Today, Joel is as active as ever and back to playing – and winning – tennis tournaments. Recovery went so well that Joel continues to send friends and family to Dr. Leone for hip and knee issues.
“He’s not only a great surgeon and an expert in his field – he’s a fine person,” said Joel. “Dr. Leone is really one of the most caring, considerate, and humble doctors I have ever met.”
I am a grateful patient. My hope is that my experience will assist others. I am a male, fifty-two years old and of Portuguese descent. In 2003 I was diagnosed with arthritis affecting my back and hips. Within a month, I went from working full time in a busy restaurant kitchen to a walker. I was in so much pain.
I remember the day that Dr. Leone operated on me. It was a Monday, Martin Luther King Day. I was home on Friday the same week. I had minimal discomfort that did not last. By the following Friday, I was comfortably riding my bike. The bike seemed more comfortable than walking because of the smooth rolling motion of the pedals. Dr. Leone fixed my other hip three months later that was St. Patrick’s Day, with the same gratifying results.
It’s now six years since my surgery. I saw Dr. Leone recently because I had developed sudden pain in the buttock after a lot of standing. I learned that my hips were functioning perfectly and the problem was coming from my back. As a chef I’m constantly on my feet, bending and lifting. For the last six years I have been able to work up to fourteen-hour shifts. I’m still in the restaurant business and have now expanded to catering.
Beaches, bikes, steps, stairs, long walks and being able to take care of myself continue to be normal for me as it may be for you.
I cannot express more deeply the appreciation I feel for Dr. Leone and his staff for giving me these six painless and mobile years, so far.
With Gratitude,
D.C.
Dear Dr. Leone,
My new hip is officially one year old today and I just want you to know that, although the one God gave me would always be my first choice, the one YOU gave me is almost as good. It is hard to believe that one year ago I was in the hospital thinking…“What have I done????” “Was the pain really that bad?” Well, the answer was “Yes”….the pain was bad and the worst part is that I was being forced to seek alternative activities to avoid pain. I was definitely not happy limping through life.
Today I am happy to say I can do almost everything that I want without pain. There are no excuses for NOT exercising or working in the yard and I am very grateful. While I am very pleased with the outcome of the surgery and the wide range of physical activity that I now enjoy, the best part of the entire process was knowing that I was in the very capable hands of you and your staff.
Of course, I had heard the glowing reviews of your handiwork from many happy patients before my husband’s hip replacement surgery in 2006. We were both overwhelmed with your personal attention and manner during his experience. Facing my own surgery was certainly a major event in my life, but I could not have felt more comfortable and confident that I was in the right hands—
God’s and yours.
My subsequent visits seeing Barbara for the stitch removal and Susan Simonton, your P.A., have been no less than perfect. I was really impressed that Susan actually gave me her cell phone number in case I had any issues and needed to contact her at any time. Now THAT is customer/patient service! You can be sure that when I speak to anyone with hip or knee problems, YOU are the one I recommend!
Thank you for being a wonderful example of what medical care should provide….and I LOVE your new office! See you in two years…
Very gratefully….Leslie Horenburger
Dr. Leone
I am 60 years old, trim, and physically fit. After running for 29 years and having 3 knee arthroscopic surgeries and 1 metatarsal great toe surgery, it was no surprise when my left hip started hurting off and on 5 years ago. But we all have aches and pains, so I dealt with it by changing to a stationary bike and giving up running.
Then, in September 2009, the hip started hurting continuously and was causing me to walk with a limp. It was impairing my ability to be as active as I prefer to be. That’s when I knew that it was time to see the hip replacement expert. I thoroughly researched orthopedics in South Florida to find a doctor who was highly experienced with total hip replacement.
I was looking for a doctor who would minimize the trauma to my muscles and tissue during the surgery so I could be up and at ‘em as soon as possible. Dr. Leone’s name kept popping up. It was also a priority to find a doctor who would ensure that both of my legs were the same length following the surgery, a common complication of total hip replacement.
I learned that Dr. Leone had invented a device that would quantify the length of the operative leg and minimize the chance of that negative outcome. I was impressed. I was also impressed that Holy Cross Hospital was rated number 30 out of all hospitals in the country for orthopedic surgery.
I definitely made the right choice with Dr. Leone. His office team treats patients with amazing care and attention, and they all work to make the experience as gentle as possible. I was walking without a limp within 3 weeks. As an aside, we opted for the Concierge VIP Private Room/Gourmet Meals option at Holy Cross Hospital, and it was well worth the splurge.

Dear Dr. Leone,
I am writing this letter approximately nine weeks after hip replacement surgery which you did at Holy Cross Hospital in March 2010. I feel terrific and I’m astounded by the results. Before surgery, I was in constant pain, unable to follow my normal daily routine, unable to sleep and miserable! Today, I am back in the gym, working full-time at my law practice and living pain-free.
I also want to compliment your staff. I could not have received better care from a group of people more interested in the patient’s well-being. Recall about 10 days following surgery, a home health nurse thought there might be a problem. On Friday afternoon I called your office. You and your staff waited for me to drive up from South Miami so you could evaluate me. Fortunately, my hip was just fine. I cannot imagine that there are many other health care providers who would have been willing to do that. Every time I called your office with a question, I was treated courteously and made to feel that my question mattered. I was always given a prompt answer.
I am more than happy with the experience. When the time comes for the right hip to be replaced, I will not have to make any effort in finding the right doctor to do it. Without question, I will come to you.
My thanks to you and your superb team, Susan, Barbara, Julie, Diana and the rest of your staff.
Sincerely,
Mitchell R. Bloomberg

Dr. Leone,
Doctor William Leone is directly responsible for allowing me to participate in the 18th Maccabiah Games July 2009 in the State of Israel. Without his surgical skills I never would have accomplished my life long goal of being on the US Team as a golfer.
I tried everything under the sun to relieve my pain in my hip without success. I tried Yoga, deep tissue massage and frequent visits to the Chiropractor. Finally I was referred to Doctor Leone. He took an X-ray and quietly and professionally recommended that I have a hip replacement. Doctor Leone explained the X-ray and why it was necessary and important to proceed. The operation frightened me, but he graciously mollified my fears. Doctor Leone instills a quiet feeling of trust and confidence. Finally, at the end of the explanation he says “if you were my brother, I would recommend you have this operation”. His genuine caring and interest in me sold me to go through the ordeal despite my fears. Thank goodness he convinced me!
The Maccabiah Games endeavor through sports to perpetuate and preserve the Jewish Community by encouraging Jewish pride, strengthening Jewish bonds and creating a heartened awareness of Israel and the Jewish identity. As a result of this involvement, I feel a sense of connections to the Jewish Religion and hence, the State of Israel that will be with me for the rest of my life. Without Doctor Leone’s knowledge, experience and care this experience never would have come to pass.
The roots of the Jewish Athletes started in Israel thousands of years ago. Then the people were dispersed to countries all around the world in the Great Diaspora. Now after so much time, the people return to play sports from over 60 countries throughout the world in the Maccabiah Games. I will return to Israel for the 19th Maccabiah Games in 2013 as the Captain of the newly created Grand-Masters 65 plus Team. Buy the way; I lead the US Masters Team to a Silver Medal in the Master Gold Event in the 18th Maccabiah Games.
Enclosed is a story descriptive of my life as a golfer penned by Rich Lerner a top reporter with the Golf Channel………………………………
“Chucky Rises”
I will return to the most historically relevant place on the earth. This is very overwhelming to me. Because of Doctor Leone’s knowledge, skill and care I will be there. Thank you Doctor Leone!
Yours Truly,
Gary Jack Freedson
In the summer of 2006, I came to Dr. Leone in a panic because my daughter Kimberly was going to need a second hip replacement on the same right hip she had replaced three years earlier by another physician. The hip was loosening and would become an emergency if an operation wasn’t done soon. It was such a stressful time for our family.
It is not easy finding doctors who do revisions so I was extremely lucky to find Dr. Leone and get an appointment. I remember that I was able to see Dr. Leone quickly due to a cancellation. Because my husband was out of town, I asked a friend to go with us to that first meeting with Dr. Leone. I wanted to make sure that I understood everything that was said and that I got all my questions answered. Immediately I was impressed that Dr Leone talked calmly to Kimberly in a reassuring way, introducing himself to her and asking her questions. Right then and there I knew we had the right doctor.
Kimberly is a young adult with Down syndrome and often doctors ask me, her mother, the questions and don’t talk that much to Kim. I knew she was nervous and Dr. Leone put us both at ease taking a lot of time explaining the operation and answering all of our questions. I was very impressed about how honest and forthright he was. He did not sugar-coat his answers. He told us of his back-up plans and what could be done if complications arose during the surgery. I had never had a doctor be so thorough with his explanation to us and I really appreciated it. It gave us so much confidence when we were so scared. We were all impressed with Dr. Leone; not only as a skilled physician, but as a doctor who could relate to his patients.
The operation and recovery went well in October 2006 and hallelujah, things are still great! Kim is walking without pain 10,000 steps every day and has lost 52 pounds. Dr. Leone has continued to be a supportive and outstanding physician in every way.
Thank you so much Dr. Leone for all you have done for our family. You know things are going well when your daughter says, “I love my life.”

May 2010
My life has completely changed since Dr. William Leone replaced my right hip just one year ago. I was miserable and frustrated before surgery. I’ve had a life long problem keeping my weight down. I had what I call the “Yoyo Syndrome”. I tried every “fade” diet but then gain the weight came right back.
My hip had become so arthritic I couldn’t bend to put on my own socks or get up from the floor, and I was limping terribly. I had been advised by other doctors I would need a hip replacement but the surgery was too difficult and dangerous because of my weight. And that I should first lose weight. Dr. Leone also advised me to have a hip replacement. I told him I was struck because I knew I needed the surgery but because I was now so handicapped and inactive with my hip, I couldn’t loss the weight.
After surgery he encouraged exercising in the swimming pool. I recall after my first post operative visit that he told me this was “my chance” and that I needed to continue to diet and exercise. That was six weeks after my surgery and I was doing great. I really followed his advice. I weighed 250 before surgery and I’m now 190. My goal is to lose another 20 lbs.
Now, I feel great. I can again take a tub bath and the best part is being able to play with my grandkids on the floor. I cannot express my gratitude enough. He cares and spent time with me after my surgery. The advice he gave was real and it stuck. Dr. Leone and his staff have been fabulous. I cannot recommend him and his team more strongly.
Sincerely,
Janis Henning
It’s all about the pain. That’s the one thought that consistently races through your mind…and you’ll try anything to get rid of it. Really. First you try the OTC medications: Advil, Tylenol, aspirin (the miracle drug—but not for this)—anything. When that doesn’t work you graduate to the “pain clinics” that have sprouted up throughout South Florida. After all—you’re not alone—many talk show hosts swear that miracles have occurred—that shots were given and pain disappeared.
You want to believe this type of endorsement because at some point the quality of life deteriorates and you really can’t do the things that were easy to accomplish—just a few months ago. Bending, reaching and stretching become activities of the past—and you start to feel—for lack of a better word—old.
Because no matter how you sit, walk, lie down, exercise (if you can) or work (which sometime becomes quite painful)…the nagging and often times searing pain creeps in and ruins your day. And its not just mental…you can see it on the faces of all those having the same problem—the “bad hip grimace” written across the face of anyone suffering from a deteriorating hip. And it’s not funny. After all—my parents had bad hips. Uncle Al from Brooklyn had bad hips. Aunt Sophie had a bad hip. How can this happen to me? I’m not old! Not me.
But it does happen…and sooner or later you have to come to grips with the fact that you need a surgeon to analyze your situation and make recommendations…because life can’t go on without quality…and there’s no quality with a bad hip. That’s the moment of epiphany.
That’s also the start down the road to recovery…when you make the call and see the doctor. My decision—after excellent recommendation from other physicians—was to seek the consul of Dr. Bill Leone of Holy Cross Hospital. Not only was this the right decision for me—but it put me on a path that resulted in focusing on “really” getting rid of the pain—and more importantly—getting my life back.
Working with Dr. Leone and his staff in itself is “therapeutic.” Each person with whom you come into contact has empthathy for your needs…and understands that you’re in pain…and probably have been for a long time. The point is this—the relationship you establish the moment you walk in the door is—for lack of a better word—nurturing. You’re not just another patient—you’re someone who needs their help—and they understand that above all—care and concern must be administered to you…not because it’s their job—but because it’s the right thing to do…and they are all part of a well organized team of concerned healthcare professionals. And that is the difference or “magic” that you feel at the Leone Center. Bottom line? It feels right.
Once the x-rays are taken and reviewed—and a course of action is discussed and agreed upon…the healing process begins…and that could be weeks before you enter Holy Cross for your surgery. Just knowing what’s really wrong with you…knowing what course of action is to be taken…and having a plan…that focus is as strong as prescriptive medicine. Because you now know what’s going to happen and that there is going to be an end to the misery within your body—life gets better.
No one likes surgery….For the uninitiated it’s just plain scary. Going to the hospital, meeting nurses, doctors, having needles placed in your arm, decisions on healthcare surrogates and other “legal” documents—and thinking that you’re not in control of your own body. Not good—and definitely not fun! In fact you’re probably going to be surrounded by a team or teams of strangers who will poke, prod, drain, infuse, feed—-all the good things that come when you surrender yourself to the “system.” As I sad, scary.
The most wonderful surprise is that this team, this group, this doctor is—different. You realize that you are part of their team…that you are part of the decision making process and that you are treated not as a number or “just another patient” but as a member of your team…the team that will work with you try give you back your life. And you now what? They feel good about it. So ultimately—you feel good about it and that’s the difference.
Starting with the workshop or lecture given by the hospital letting you know what the process is all about (no surprises) and how you will be working with the staff at Holy Cross and eventually ending up in your room post surgery surrounded by well trained and caring nurses, assistants, therapists and other support staff—your journey to recovery is really a fairly seamless experience. There’s pain—but it is mitigated in various ways with medications and activity. Part of dealing with the pain is learning how to deal with yourself—knowing what’s coming and preparing for it. So pain—as we would normally define it…isn’t the big concern. It’s handled. You’ll handle it!
But that’s the regimen for the Leone Center. Working with you. Explaining. Creating trust and understanding. It’s not just the medicine or the surgery or the therapy. It’s the psychology of the team—the caring for and understanding of patients needs—and knowing just what to do to make it better. That prescription can’t be filled at any pharmacy…it comes from the heart after years of training and working with hundreds of folks just like me and you.
Weeks later the pain disappears and life—as you knew it—returns. That energy to want to go out and be part of what was so painful just earlier…comes back. And you know what? That grimace that was etched across your face? It’s gone. Life is good—again. Thank you seems so inadequate to all those working with Dr. Leone—-but you know—-that’s all that’s needed. Just a simple thank you.
If you’re sitting in Dr. Leone’s waiting room reading this letter, then you are in the right place. Perhaps you’re thinking of seeking out more opinions but now that you’re here, it’s not necessary, as you have found the best surgeon and team in South Florida.
I hope my letter will especially inspire and encourage younger patients who are wondering, “How could this be? I’m only in my 50s, I eat healthy, take my vitamins and I exercise.” As time goes by, you will run into other hip replacement patients as I did who are even younger and you will realize that it’s not just a condition of aging. I like to tell myself that from being so active “I simply wore out my shock absorbers.”
Since my 20s, exercise and healthy eating have always been an important part of my life. I taught aerobic dance and yoga on cruise ships in my 30s and I now work in the Meeting and Event business, which entails a lot of walking around hotel meeting space and convention halls. Two years ago my associates noticed I was always limping after a few days at a meeting. My hip would hurt like crazy but as soon as I got home and rested it for a couple of days the pain would disappear. Eight months ago I joined a gym and resumed yoga only to have the intense stabbing pain in my hip prohibit me from many of the stances. I noticed that the pain was becoming more constant and now my back was hurting as well, it was even hard for me to walk my dogs and nighttime was the worst especially when I turned over in bed.
Last December 2009 I had had enough, too many pain killers followed by more pain so I sought out a diagnosis. My 1st and 2nd opinion doctors offered no comfort to my shock (and tears) when I was informed I needed a hip replacement. I was very afraid as to what to do next; “the unknown.” Then a good friend of mine referred me to the Leone Center where her farther had a very successful Hip Replacement.
From my first phone call I knew everything was going to be all right as the entire set up was different with a support team that’s beyond comparison. My 1st consultation was well managed with no waiting. I was taken from room to room for x-rays and consultations and given such great attention, I felt very special. After consulting with Dr. Leone, who showed me the close up of my X-rays and gave me a detailed explanation of what I was looking at and how to fix the problem, total confidence replaced all my fears.
There are quite a few preparation steps that you will need to go through before the big day but not to worry—there’s so much kindness, patience, help and support given by the Dr. Leone team that getting it all accomplished is a breeze.
Lastly, I just want you to know that there is nothing to fear. Every single person that had anything to do with my surgery came and introduced him or herself to me and gently explained their part in the prep and the operation. I felt such immense confidence, which is very important. I truly don’t remember a thing after the anesthetic and woke up with minimal pain. The Holy Cross Hospital is wonderful, and the therapists give you lots of encouragement to get moving. The food’s not bad and the volunteers are a great asset.
As I write this letter it has been 8 weeks since the operation and I do my exercises most days. Last week while on holiday, I swam 15 lengths of a rather large swimming pool every day for a week. This week I will join the Y to use their pool and stationary bikes.
Good Luck! Stay Positive and Look Forward to being Pain Free.

Dear Dr. Leone,
Don’t know if this is the first time you’ve heard from a patient’s spouse, but since I saw Barbara’s experience from start to end without the impediment of anesthesia, I feel more competent to write.
Putting off her needed replacement hip for two years left Barb in a lot of pain and, when she finally found a doctor she felt comfortable with (you), time really was important. We both hoped for the best, but what we got from you and your staff was better than our highest expectations.
First, the operation was scheduled for an early date. Second, we’ve never seen such complete cooperation and information supplied by your personal assistants who are a pleasure. But, the day of the operation was the happiest surprise of all.
As instructed, we arrived early, and were met by hospital staff augmented by your former patients who told us their stories that sounded more like miracles! You had said Barb would be prepped and ready for the OR by 7:00 AM with surgery to start about 7:30 and take about an hour.
At 8:25AM, you met me downstairs to tell me how well everything went. When Barbara awoke in her room not long after that, I found out what you meant, for even at the early hour, she was a very happy camper. Admitting to some post op pain, she still smiled and told me it’s a whole different kind of pain.
She was on her feet and ready to go much sooner than I ever expected and now, a year later, she’s your biggest fan!
We both thank you.
Sincerely,
David Rosen
I am a success story. I was born with a medical condition known as Congenital Hip Luxation. As a child, I underwent numerous (approximately 7 or 8) corrective surgical procedures in my native Peru. As a result of my last procedure, my left hip became fixed in the bone socket. I was unable to lift my left leg and the muscles in my leg did not develop properly.
My name is Roberto Sotomayor, 43-years-old, married and father of 3 children.
As a result of this dreadful outcome, I endured a lot of physical challenges and severe pain throughout my life. Severe arthritis developed, and ultimately I required a total hip replacement on both hips.
After I met Dr. Leone, I immediately recognized his gift, experience, dedication and compassion. I knew in my heart then that I was going to be all right.
Dr. Leone successfully performed a total hip replacement on my right leg. My quality of life was significantly improved. The biggest challenge was yet to come! The pain from my left leg had extended to my lower back, my neck and shoulders. There were many days that I simply could not get out of bed. I required a very risky and highly complicated total left hip replacement. Once again, I turned to Dr. Leone. One of the surgeries performed as a child resulted in my femur bone healing in a twisted, rotated position. Dr. Leone was able to correct the deformity; the results to me are nothing short of a miracle. My surgery has been successful.
It has been a little over a year since my surgery, and I have been pain free for the first time in my life. I remember telling Dr. Leone that this is the first time that I can recall not experiencing any pain while sleeping. I am back to enjoying life and my family. I have even taken on new tasks, such as putting on my socks without assistance, sitting straight, driving a manual transmission car and going for walks. I am very grateful to the Lord for leading me to Dr. William Leone and his staff.
Your most sincere patient,
Roberto Sotomayor
I have gone from limited mobility and constant pain to feeling like a brand new person. I was so pleased with the outcome of both surgeries that I couldn’t stop telling anyone and everyone who would listen. Dr. Leone gave me my life back.
I was so reluctant to get my first hip replacement surgery. I had suffered for at least 2 years with pain that progressively got worse and worse. I kept putting off the surgery. I was in agony even sitting in one position and pain medicines not longer helped. Nothing helped relieve the pain.
I had my first surgery, which was a left total hip replacement on July 30, 2009. My first surgery went well and I couldn’t believe how quickly I recovered. I also couldn’t believe I had waited so long, putting off the inevitable and suffering in pain longer than I needed to. Others had told me that their surgery was the best decision they had ever made, but I was pessimistic and scared. I wish I had listened.
Dr. Leone and his staff were amazing. They were warm and friendly and made me feel like a real person; not just a procedure that was on their schedule. They explained what was going to happen, what I should expect before and after the surgery. Naturally I was nervous, but they made me feel at ease. The whole team was there for me with professionalism and compassion.
I had my right hip replaced on March 30, 2010. This time was even more of a breeze. I scheduled the surgery as soon as the pain began and recovery was even faster and smoother than the previous time.
Dr. Leone saved my life. I have gone from limited mobility and constant pain to feeling like a brand new person. I was so pleased with the outcome of both surgeries that I couldn’t stop telling anyone and everyone who would listen. Dr. Leone gave me my life back. My range of motion is fantastic and finally; I have no more pain. I do recommend doing the pre-operative exercises and following the post surgical exercise as well. For me, exercising in the pool has been the best form of physical therapy because gravity is eliminated and I think my recovery was expedited as a result.
I cannot thank Dr. Leone, Susan, Barbara, Julie and Diana enough for their dedication and helpfulness throughout this process. The preparation, the antibiotics, and the plan of care this team put together has been magical and I will be forever grateful to each of them.
Sincerely,
MaryAnn DiPietro
Dear Dr. Leone,
I enjoy hiking, and spend some time each summer in the Berskshire mountains of Western Massachusetts. The most challenging hikes there go up Mount Greylock, and there are a number of approaches. This being Massachusetts, however, and so very egalitarian, one can also drive to the summit, where there is a monument, and a lodge. I however, have never ridden up or down-hiking Greylock for me is an annual rite of passage, and I did it even as my hip continued to deteriorate.
A year ago, however, when I got to the top of the mountain, I was in serious pain. I realized that I couldn’t be sure of getting down safely. I called my partner Mark, and he came to pick me up. That was when I decided I had had enough.
Flash forward a year. Not only did I get up and down Greylock with ease, I took the most challenging trails, and added to them by doing a loop involving taking a summit trail. I felt great both that day and the day afterwards – not sore in the slightest. In fact, I sent my sister Barbara Carmel (also recently your patient) a text from the summit: “On top of Greylock. New hip works great”.
Thanks again!
Yours,
Jerry Chasen
NERVOUS? How about a doctor that treats you like a family member , a staff that goes above and beyond to make the process effortless , and going to a doctor’s appointment without a crowded waiting room. Now you can relax.
I am writing this letter as a sincere thank you to Dr. Leone and his dedicated staff for their exceptional care and service. Dr Leone came highly recommended and upon meeting him for the first time I was overtaken by his professionalism. I was nervous about having my hip replacement surgery, but the results are amazing and the entire recovery process has gone quite smoothly. Putting myself in Dr Leone`s exceptional hands was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I am only sorry that I didn`t make the decision to have the surgery sooner. Having gone through this entire process with Dr Leone and staff will only make my future surgery on my other hip that much easier.
Thank you Dr. Leone.
Bob Arnold
No one – including me – can believe how quickly I’ve gotten well. I’ve made a phenomenal recovery. I’m walking “normally” without a cane and with absolutely no discomfort.
Can’t thank you enough!
Dear Dr. Leone,
I visited you this past week for my 6 week check up following my surgery for total replacement. No one – including me – can believe how quickly I’ve gotten well. I’ve made a phenomenal recovery. I’m walking “normally” without a cane and with absolutely no discomfort.
I can’t thank you enough for the amazing job that you did!! You were the fourth orthopedist that I “interviewed”. I chose you for several reasons and am so thrilled that I did:
1. You came highly recommended to me by a racquetball friend of my husband’s that you operated on for total hip replacement several years ago.
2. You came highly recommended to me by a close friend of mine whose mother has worked at Holy Cross in the administrative department for many years and said you were by far the best of the best.
3. I viewed your website and really liked what you had to say.
4. When I came to your office for my initial consultation it was very very different from the other doctors I had met with. The whole experience was far better than anything I had experienced thus far.
I felt as though I was treated like royalty. I greatly appreciated the information you provided on “who’s who” on your staff and their phone numbers. Your examination of me, my MRI, and my X-ray was by far the most in-depth and insightful.
After my actual surgery I had minimal pain. Everyone at Holy Cross – including the nurses and the physical therapists – was terrific! The first few days after my surgery were “challenging” to be sure but I made rapid and amazing progress every day! My whole surgical experience was blissful – far better than I could have ever anticipated. I am very thankful that I selected you to do my surgery.
You are a very skilled and caring surgeon who has lived up to your outstanding reputation!
I will gladly and proudly recommend you to anyone that I know of who is in need of hip surgery.
Many many thanks!

I am writing this memoir to you on this day and date with great appreciation and gratitude for giving me this miraculous reason to celebrate life.
A SECOND ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
August 24, 2010
Dear Dr. Leone:
I am writing this memoir to you on this day and date with great appreciation and gratitude for giving me this miraculous reason to celebrate fife.
Two years ago today, I placed my trust in your hands and underwent my first total hip replacement on the right hip, with great success, two months later under your watchful eye and skillful procedures, you were able to perform a total hip replacement on my right hip. Both of these procedures were necessary to alleviate the pain and anxiety I had been experiencing from osteoarthritis.
Mission Accomplished. I was now able to begin a new life with two evenly placed hips and a new appetite (both physically and mentally) for life. Although, it may sound like peaches and cream, the reality of the recuperation was challenging. Constant and vigilant therapy, recuperative pain management, education on proper exercises and movements along with continuous communication with Dr. Leone and his team after both surgeries helped me overcome my fears and apprehension of the rehabilitation process necessary to strengthen my body the correct way. I followed the instructions Dr. Leone gave me and lo and behold, I was able to walk again with ease. I am still careful and abide by the safe precautions I learned and will take these with me indefinitely.
Dr. Leone, your expertise and wonderful team of doctors, physician assistants, nurses, therapists, trainers and coordinators made my recovery possible. The care, pristine surroundings, state of the art techniques, guidance, instructions and management of my care pre and post operatively was superb.
At 57 years of age, I am a woman who never would have thought she would be walking around with two new hips. I come from a medical background and as a child I watched my late father, a renowned orthopedic surgeon perform the surgeries Dr. Leone does and always admired his compassion and dedication to his patients and profession, not to mention his love for his family. I do believe my father’s spirit was with me when I decided to choose Dr. William Leone to be my doctor. Dr. Leone’s qualifications and reputation, convinced me that I would be having the top expert in this filed at his state of the art medical facility in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I am so happy I made the decision.
To this day Dr. Leone conducts his world class practice with great professionalism and pride and always makes time for me whenever I need appointments, check ups or even questions regarding other medical topics.
Again, thank you, Dr. Leone. I am one of your biggest fans. P.S. I would be happy to speak to any of your patients and tell them about my great results.
Sincerely,
M.S.
On August 23rd 2010, and 46 years old, I had my left hip replaced at Holy Cross Hospital by Dr. Leone. Dr. Leone is known through out the industry for state of the art procedures he performs and outcomes are “off the charts.” As a professional in this field I know how important it is to avoid complications. I also know that it’s critical that your physician is proficient at what he & his team does as well as how important the post-op rehab is. I’ve observed many surgeries over the years so I knew too well of what my body was about to go through. Dr. Leone, his team, the nursing & rehab staffs were outrageous!
Dear Dr. Leone,
October 18, 2010
Thank You for relieving my pain and giving me back my professional & personal life!
I highly recommend Dr. Leone and his team to anyone with debilitating hip or knee pain that wants their life back.
I’ve been a Physical Therapist Assistant for over 20 yrs in all facets of rehab including sports medicine, acute care & traditional home care. I now supervise over 30 therapists in Broward and Palm Beach Counties in 11 Senior Living Communities providing Home Care & Outpatient Rehab. Until my mid 30’s I regularly played softball and basketball in men’s leagues and coached my kids in all of their sports. I had to stop all of these activities “cold” because I developed intractable pain in my left hip and groin.
When I first started seeing orthopedists for my pain; and they were numerous, they told me to “come back when your 50 and I’ll replace it”. Please remember, I was in my mid 30’s. I was diagnosed with acetabular spurs and a torn labrum. Being a therapist I tried to treat myself to control my pain symptoms. I also used any connections I had to see the “right doctors.” During those years that I was actively treating patients, I cared for many who had been operated on by Dr. Leone and consistently they had great outcomes. At this point I still did not allow myself to believe that I was ready, at 43 year old. to have a hip replacement. In 2007 I had my 1st of two arthroscopic surgeries to remove loose bodies & trim the labrum; I got almost 1 year of relief. In March 2010 I had my 2nd arthroscopic surgery and got zero relief. I actually became more debilitated and depressed.
In July 2010 I had my first visit with Dr. Leone; in that visit he changed my life! Dr. Leone not only saw all the damage that had been done to my hip, but the damage my hip had done to my life. He told me he could do a total hip replacement, get me back to work quickly and give me back my life. I live for my kids, to go boating, fishing, diving and golfing.

In 3 nights & 4 days I was discharged home walking with crutches with only surgical soreness; NO MORE pain in my hip. Again, with my knowledge I knew how important it was to make sure I did my therapy to reach my goal of getting back to work in 2 weeks. I went to one of my outpatient clinics everyday for the first 2 weeks. I also walked for miles, everyday, on all different surfaces. I returned to work at full duty 16 days after surgery without any assistive device. I thank Dr. Leone and his team. I’ve also started an aquatic exercise program and I’m again swimming laps in my pool.
I’m just 7 weeks post-op and I’m completely pain free, working fulltime, riding my stationary bike 5 miles per day, swimming and exercising daily for the first time in years. And I’ve already played 3 rounds of golf without any pain!
Thank you Dr. Leone and your wonderful team.

Dr. Leone,
On Feb 15th 2010, you performed a Total Hip Replacement on my wife, Lorri. We just returned from a three week vacation in Italy and Greece. We thought you’d enjoy seeing your patient at the top of Acropolises, in Greece. You gave my wife back her health, state of mind and her quality of life. I intend to take Lorri to many more places in this world. I know she’ll be able to really enjoy herself. I know she thanks you, but I too Thank You very much.
David
Dear Dr. Leone,
I’m very grateful for your skill in performing my recent right hip replacement and then my partial right knee replacement. After my hip surgery, I could not imagine letting anyone else operate on my knee. It’s just six weeks since the knee surgery and and I’m walking as if nothing happened. For the first time in years, my leg is straight and I’m in no pain.
You and your staff deserve all the credit. I thank you for your skill, concern and warmth.
Many thanks,

A Medical Miracle
My eternal gratitude to Dr, William A. Leone, Jr. He is a superb clinician who took a crippled woman and made her whole again. After four years of pain and being unable to walk erect, he replaced my hip and returned me to normalcy. I am now able to enjoy life again. My recovery was amazing. I was fully rehabilitated in four weeks. I’m seventy-eight years old.
I had been putting off dealing with my arthritic right hip because I had such a difficult recovery after my left hip was replaced four years prior. It has never felt really comfortable. My new hip was already better than the left one just four weeks after surgery. What a completely different experience this time.
The entire process from our first meeting through the procedure, hospitalization and after care was exceptional. Dr. Leone instilled such confidence in me; he alleviated any apprehensions I had. He is sincere, caring and has great empathy for his patients.
Dr Leone’s team, Susan, Diane, Julie, and Rose could not be better and more efficient. Everyone in the office handled all phases with accuracy and [timeliness]. You cannot make a better choice than Dr. Leone.
Holy Cross Hospital was also exceptional. Simply, everyone was kind and competent. The extra services which Dr. Leone’s team was able to arrange, like the private room and VIP meals, made the experience even more exceptional.
GOD BLESS HIM

Dear Dr. Leone,
Words may not be adequate to thank you and your staff for the how two hip replacements have changed my life over five years ago. I was taking eight ibuprofen each day, which weren’t even adequate to mitigate the bone-grinding pain I experienced with every step. Now, twenty-five pounds lighter and feeling great I never think about the old hips. I am active, happy and totally pain free. I have no limitations whatsoever and appreciate your sincerity and professionalism from my first appointment with you to the most recent.
My first appointment with you was ten years ago. I had trepidations regarding surgery and you assured me that the decision was mine. You told me to come back ‘when you can’t stand the pain any more’. I returned to you five years later and I felt welcomed and in the best of hands. The only thing that has changed since first becoming your patient is your brand new Leone Center for Orthopedic Care. The Center is absolutely gorgeous, but your staff remains as personable and professional as ever.
To any patient considering having a surgery with you, I would say ‘look no further, because you’ve found the best’.
Thank you for all you’ve done for me and those who love me!!
Sincerely,
Rob Kenner

I give my highest recommendation to any patients that are looking for a “top notch” professional when they require hip replacement surgery.
Dr. Leone:
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you and your staff for the excellent care I received for my two (2) hip replacement surgeries.
I felt welcome from the minute I stepped into your office. The atmosphere is comfortable and everyone involved in the process makes you feel at ease.
You are one of the few physicians, in my experience, that truly listens to the “patient’s point of view.” In addition to being a most skillful surgeon you are compassionate.
I give my highest recommendation to any patients that are looking for a “top notch” professional when they require hip replacement surgery.
Thank you, again.

Dear Dr. Leone, It has been 15 months since you replaced the inboard (military) part of my knee and I want to let you know how everything has worked out. I chose a private room at Holy Cross Hospital because my wife wanted to stay with me. She slept overnight in an adjoining bed and we had meals together. That worked out great. The food was outstanding. I couldn’t have asked for a better nursing staff. Physical therapy was also superb and I started walking the very next day. I walked out of the hospital with a walker but didn’t really need it. I had regained my full range of motion within 2 weeks and walking a couple miles within 3 weeks. Eight months later I was elk hunting with a bow in Southwest Colorado climbing 2,000 foot elevations and descending with a 35 pound pack. No problem at all. The young guide said, “I never seen a dang flat lander (I'm from Minnesota) keep up with me.” My knee feels great and I don’t even think about it anymore. Thank you. David Jeronimus 4-7-12
For twenty years or more I have had pain in my left knee and was told that I would need a knee replacement one day. I always enjoyed being physically active, including tennis, swimming and going to the gym. With time I became aware of increased pain and difficulty in performing some everyday functions such as climbing stairs and getting up from the dinner table and being able to immediately walk away. The changes were subtle and you just make adjustments. Suddenly, in late 2008, after I had retired from the practice of law, I had two instances of sharp pain in the knee and needed a crutch and then a cane to walk. The acute episodes improved to the point where I could again walk without pain but the writing was on the wall. I realized that there would be progressive deterioration and activity-limiting discomfort.
A friend of mine had both of his knees replaced by Dr. Leone and sang his praises. In addition, a surgeon friend recommended him. We met in December 2008. After some time understanding my history and examining me, he reviewed my X-rays with me. I could see why my knee hurt so badly. The X-rays showed that the normal spaces between the bones had eroded and the bones were now touching. He diagnosed degenerative osteoarthritis and recommended a total knee replacement.
In February 2009, Dr. Leone replaced my left knee. I was pleased with the care at Holy Cross Hospital. Dr. Leone’s team was great.
I recently saw Dr. Leone for my one-year checkup. I forget that I even had surgery, the knee feels so comfortable. The scar is minimal. I can easily walk 4 or 5 miles without discomfort. I ride my bike, swim and work out at the gym for exercise—-and there is no pain. I could not be more pleased
I tried everything I could think of to avoid knee replacement—exercise, injections, even arthroscopy. Nothing stopped the knee pain that was keeping me from canoeing, biking and diving, activities that I enjoy . I scoured the area for a doctor with whom I felt comfortable. When I found Dr. Leone, I agreed to go ahead with a right knee replacement. The surgery took place on November 2, 2009.
I was walking and exercising the next day with a therapist. There was some pain, but nothing I couldn’t handle with the prescribed medication The fact that Dr. Leone used a running stitch rather than staples to close the surgical incision helped a lot. My hospital roommate told me that she sure wished her doctor hadn’t used staples because I seemed to be able to move so much better than she and I seemed to have so much less pain.
Three days after surgery I went home and started outpatient therapy. My physical therapists said that I was able to perform exercises weeks faster than their other total knee replacement patients. Five and one-half weeks later I was riding my bike again—short jaunts at first but up to three miles a day by week six!
When I went back for my post-operative visit with Dr. Leone six weeks after the surgery, he told me that he was very proud of my progress. The x-rays taken that day showed absolute perfection. My bones with the new parts appeared perfectly aligned so it was it no wonder that I was able to mend so quickly and perform so well. I was able to extend my leg to 180 degrees with no effort, and he measured my flexion at 110 degrees. He gave me permission to discontinue PT and to continue exercising on my own.
I continued to exercise at home every day. Everybody was amazed by my progress. I walked without any limp and with no pain. Once again I could do the things I love; canoe, bike and dive, just two months after my surgery.
When my left knee began to exhibit the same symptoms, I had no qualms whatsoever about asking Dr. Leone to do another total knee replacement. This second surgery was performed on March 24, 2010. This knee hasn’t been exactly the same as the first, and I’m told that every surgery is different even though the same procedure is used. The results have been equally astonishing—again I began outpatient PT less than a week after surgery and again I was able to ride my bike by week six. The x-rays again show perfect alignment and healing.
I recommend Dr. Leone to anybody who is having a knee replacement. He is the kindest and most caring individual I have ever known. He is also incredibly talented and plans his work carefully so that each surgical procedure is absolutely precise in every way. He works together with his knowledgeable and personable staff to help patients understand exactly what he is going to do, how he is going to do it, and what the results will be.
Dr. Leone saved me. I was born with hemophilia A, which has resulted in the destruction of multiple joint throughout my life due to bleeding. I was only 44 years old when I met Dr. Leone. I had had a total knee replacement preformed in another state for severe arthritis. Unfortunately there were complications including an infection. Because of my hemophilia, treating me which would require more surgery was much more complicated.
I did not live in Florida at the time but my parents did. I was initially referred to Dr. Gordon Hill and he referred me to Dr. William Leone as the “only man for the job.” I think Dr. Leone was the only one who would take my case.
Dr. Leone removed my artificial knee and cleaned out the infection. After being treated with IV antibiotics and Factor VIII he put a new knee back in. It was extremely complicated because of the degree of bone loss and my bleeding problems. I remember he was so proud of the result and even showed my X-rays to other doctors during lectures he gave. He placed an allograft femur inside my remaining femur in order to reconstruct the destroyed femur. The allograft femur came from a bone bank. He was able to get my remaining bone to heal to the allograft bone and in this way the surrounding soft tissues were preserved.
Although my motion was never great, I’m been infection free and able to live independently. I did move to South Florida after my surgery and then to New Mexico. I again returned to Florida but now Dayton Beach. In spite of the many miles I’ve always lived from Dr. Leone, I continue to travel to have him check me because I trust him.
Sincerely,
Tim Plumeri
Dear Dr. Leone,
Prior to having Double Knee Replacement I was not able to walk without cane/walker in over 10 years. Now, I can walk over a mile with out assistance, I feel great, I’m losing weight and more active than I’ve been in over 20 years as a result of my new knees. To me they are BIONIC…LOL I feel like the $6,000,000.00 man with the new life you have enabled me to have. It has been four (4) months since my surgery and I am doing so much more than prior to the procedure. I am getting stronger every day.
I thank God, daily for the skill He has given you and the desire to help others. You and your staff have truly been a blessing in my life.
Thank you and God Bless,
Danny Cornelius
Dr. William Leone,
I’ve been suffering for many years with pain in both of my knees; so much pain that I had difficulty simply walking. My knees were literally “bone to bone.” They were totally worn out with no remaining cartilage separating the bones. So what was the solution? For a long time I took Glucosamine on a daily basis, believing and hoping that what the label said was true, that it would rebuild cartilage. I felt like the Glucosamine had become my crutch. With it I was in pain, without it I was worse. As the condition of my knees became worse, the glucosamine seemed to help less and less until it seemed no longer to be helping. Also it became very expensive.
I also had Cortisone shots, but that was only temporary. I started to walk bow legged and I looked much older than I really was. I felt depressed and disenchanted. I would look back at my younger days when I was able to dance, run and yes, walk without pain. And so here I’m thinking, “wow, those were the happy days.”
After I met Dr. William Leone “happy days are here again at the Leone Center!”
When I first met Dr. Leone, I knew from the beginning that he would be the Doctor that I would trust to help me re-build a normal life and bring back my happiness. Dr. Leone is the kind of person who looks right into your eyes and soul. He is honest and sincere, trustworthy and personable. I remember Dr. Leone’s words when he was reassuring me about the many individuals at Holy Cross Hospital who would be involved in my care. He told me “there are so many good souls.” He was right. Everyone who I came in contact with at Holy Cross Hospital was caring and so nice. It was really a “holy experience.”
The surgery? I had both of my knees replaced on the same day. My surgery was exceptionally well done. Dr. Leone is the epitome of the word gentleman. Furthermore, he is one of the best orthopedic surgeons in the USA, and around the world – Google him and find out for yourself. People come from across the oceans to get under his wings. I came from the Dominican Republic. Now I am able to walk, dance, run, and swim without pain.
Thank you so much Dr. Leone for giving me back a normal life. I again feel 100%. Thank you for your expertise, for your kindness and for your friendship. I feel like Dr. Leone is my friend who took great care of me!
May God bless you and give you many, many more years so that you can keep being the humanitarian soul you are.
Sincerely,
Jose M Riva
Still not ready to have surgery, I put it off until I could no longer stand the pain.
My name is Barbara Seay. I have been a nurse for 39 years. I have seen everything, including knee surgery. After many years of walking up and down the hallways, the wear & tear began to affect my knees. I started to experience knee pain; more in the right than the left knee. After seeing some “not-so-good knee surgery” I was hesitant about surgery. However, the pain got worse. It was difficult to walk and work my 12-hour shift.
I went to see a friend who is a rehab doctor. X-rays were done & the results were that I needed to have knee surgery; not what I wanted to hear. Still not ready to have surgery, I put it off until I could no longer stand the pain. After praying and realizing that it was not going away, I made an appointment to see Dr. Leone who was highly recommended. The receptionist, the Nurse Barbara, his PA Susan, and the X-Ray team were all very professional and kind.
Then I met Dr. Leone with his winning smile and gentle handshake. I knew I had made the right decision. He explained everything to me and showed me the X-ray, explaining that I needed surgery, but it was my call.
On Feb 8, 2010 I had surgery—total right knee replacement. On the day of surgery in the holding area, Dr. Leone spoke with my son and my sister to explain the procedure. The surgery was successful!
On Feb 11, 2010 I was discharged to a rehab center for 10 days. Post-op checkup was good. During outpatient rehab, when asked who my surgeon was, I told them, and they all said the same thing: “You will do well, he’s the best.”
After 10 weeks, I returned to work able to continue my 12- hour shift with no limitations. I’m only sorry I waited so long for the surgery.
THANK YOU Dr. Leone!!
Prior to surgery you explained that you would be responsible for 50% of the result and the other 50% was up to me. My 50% would not have been so successful if your first 50% wasn’t so outstanding.
August 18, 2010
Dear Dr. Leone,
THANK YOU Dr. Leone, and THANK YOU TO YOUR WONDERFUL TEAM for talking such good care of me! I am in my eighth week of recovery from bilateral total knee replacement and am very happy with my progress. Prior to surgery you explained that you would be responsible for 50% of the result and the other 50% was up to me. My 50% would not have been so successful if your first 50% wasn’t so outstanding.
My story begins with an explosion. During my service to this country, I was “hit by a wall” during an explosion while in a war zone. I survived but sustained permanent injury to both knees. With time I developed arthritis with “windswept” deformities. The right knee leaned inward and the left knee leaned outward, causing both knees to lean to the left, the right more than 18 degrees. I’ve always been an athlete and I pushed myself. After completing my years of service, I became a tennis professional and played many tournaments, exhibitions and taught many hours of lessons. Because of my knees, I progressively required pain reducers, knee braces etc., and suffered constant discomfort. I recall playing a tournament this past May and the following day being unable to walk, let alone continue to play. Our family Orthopedic Surgeon told me I needed knee replacements and referred me to Dr. William Leone at Holy Cross Hospital.
I researched you and The Leone Center for Orthopedic Care and consulted with a lifelong friend who has been associated with knee replacements professionally for over 20 years. My friend knew all about your reputation and the reputation of Holy Cross Hospital and told me “I couldn’t find a better surgeon”.
When I called, your office staff greeted me warmly and I was able to see you the following week. This is the way I like to get things done. During my appointment, we talked, your examined both me knees and then reviewed the X-rays. You told me I needed both knees replaced. Next, your nurse Barbara O’Brien, R.N. came into the room and organized what needed to be done and helped me through the whole process.
The operation took place June 30, 2010, at Holy Cross Hospital. Everything went flawlessly. I very much appreciated the daily visits by you, Barbara and your P. A., Susan Simonton. The in-patient Intensive Rehab at Holy Cross was superb. I began riding my bike 4 weeks after surgery and at five weeks, I started hitting tennis balls with my wife Elizabeth, who is also a tennis Pro. Each day my legs feel stronger and I do more and more.
Thank you and your team Dr. Leone for getting me back in the game!
Respectfully,
Dru Ackert, USPTA, PTR
Thank you Dr. Leone for your surgical expertise and your physical therapy encouragement. I would not be able to do the things I’m now doing without you.
Once upon a time, there was a middle aged woman who suffered with knee pain. She saw her orthopedist who prescribed medications, which did help for a while. He then prescribed shots, which also helped for a while. After several years, the pain became so disabling that it limited her ability to be active, even with simple activities of daily life. That’s when she decided to really consider surgery.
She asked around and the name that she heard the most was Dr. William Leone.
She met with Dr. Leone who evaluated her knees and recommended double knee replacement surgery. This was done on October 12, 2009. After surgery she had physical therapy and then aquatic therapy. The aquatic therapy has really been superb. It’s now one year since surgery and she has continued to exercise in an aquatic program on a regular basis, something she never did and couldn’t do before her surgery. She feels like “she has her life back.” She’s even planning a dream vacation to China with her son, who encouraged her throughout the process.
Thank you Dr. Leone for your surgical expertise and your physical therapy encouragement. I would not be able to do the things I’m now doing without you.
Sincerely,
Marsha Lamberg
Dear Dr Leone,
I would like to take the time to thank you first and foremost for changing my life! I am a 49-year-old female who had been suffering with progressive knee pain for over ten years. The orthopedist I had been seeing for approximately 7 years kept telling me I was too young to have this surgery, and I should wait until I could not stand the pain anymore. I suppose that day came, and I scheduled a consultation with you. I really didn’t think that I was actually going to schedule the surgery, but wanted to hear what you had to say. You had operated on several people that I knew, and they were very happy with their outcomes. I was immediately reassured by your manner, your thoroughness and your confidence that this is what I needed to do. As a result, I scheduled bilateral knee replacment surgery for 6 weeks later, shocking myself and my husband!! I was that sure that you were the man for the job and that I was ready for this.
I followed your instructions to the letter, doing all the pre-op testing, exercising, etc. so when the day came, I would be totally ready. The surgery went well, and I stayed in the hospital for three days, and then rehab for nine more days. You had told me that I would be walking unaided by two weeks. That did not happen… I actually was walking unaided in one week!!! The therapists have never seen a more miraculous recovery!!! It has now been three months and I have not felt this good in over ten years. I am riding a bicycle five miles, walking without pain, sitting without pain, sleeping without pain and standing without pain. I actually forget that these were things that always gave me a lot of trouble.
You, Dr. Leone, gave me my life back. I am actually going to visit my daughter in Europe next week and we are going to do a bicycle tour of Amsterdam. I walk normally for the first time in many, many years. I can never thank you enough for all that you have given me. My only regret is that I did not have the surgery sooner. If anyone would like to talk to me about the surgery, I would be my pleasure. All the best,
Jana Feldman,
May 2011
Dear Dr. Leone, I just wanted to add a little postscript to my prior email. I just got back from ten days visiting my daughter in Europe. I probably walked 8 hours/day without any pain. I was able to climb steps, pull luggage through the airport, stand in line for an hour, etc. It is absolutely incredible. Thanks again for changing my life!
Best,
Jana, June 2011

Dear Dr. Leone,
There is an old cliché that goes something like this, “if it sounds too good to be true, then it is.” Happily, that cliché is incorrect in our relationship with you.
We are snowbirds and spend 6 months of the year in the New York / New Jersey area. That’s where my husband had planned to have his knee replacement surgery. But this winter, we attended a seminar that you gave, where everything sounded too good to be true. From the explanations of the procedure (with diagrams and films) to the confident, complete, non-condescending answers to the attendees’ questions, we found our confidence in you growing. We left the seminar convinced that you were the surgeon for the job.
And we were right—you were the right surgeon. And you were right. Everything went as you described — the surgery, the post op, the physical therapy, and the hospital stay. My husband was up and around in a few days and didn’t even need a walker or cane. People in our community were amazed at his progress and we kept passing out your business cards to others who had similar problems.
From your competent office staff and professional staff, to the nurses, doctors and therapists at Holy Cross, my husband’s experience was top-rate.
Thank you Dr. Leone, you have made a difference in my husband’s (and my) life. Although he’ll never play tennis :-) he is able to walk without pain for the first time in about 20 years.
Thanks again for your work, your attitude, your personality and your caring.

Just wanted to let you know that last week I played in a golf Tournament at Ocean Reef just 8+ weeks after my knee surgery.
